Two people, one a police officer, were injured in an accident on I-77 near Newburgh Heights. The officer had just pulled over a vehicle on I-77 northbound, and had parked his patrol car on the side of the road with the lights flashing as is customary for officers making a stop. However, a pickup truck that was speeding along the highway suddenly appeared and hit the parked cruiser while the officer was still inside, flipping over the vehicle. Both the officer and the driver of the pickup truck were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
The officer was reported to be banged up but alert after the accident. While there is not yet any official cause of the accident listed in reports, law enforcement officials believe that alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. The investigation into the accident will continue to uncover the full cause.
Drivers who get behind the wheel while under the influence of drugs or alcohol pose an extreme danger to other drivers, pedestrians and themselves.
