The Accident
William Tate-Mitros was walking down the sidewalk in Manhattan in 2008 when a bus drove onto the curb and over his foot. It took multiple surgeries to correct the damage done to Tate-Mitros’s foot and some areas were left unrepaired due to complications with his medical procedures. He was never able to regain full use of his foot, and the injury had a substantial impact on his quality of life from that time forward.
Once a successful interior designer, ice skater, and ballroom dancer, Tate-Mitros was left disabled and dependent on a cane, and then a walker, to get around. He was forced to retire early and give up his favorite activities. The accident, and a subsequent, unrelated stroke left him permanently disabled and living in a nursing home, unable to live independently or care for himself.
The Lawsuit and Decision
Tate-Mitros’s tale is one of tragedy. It only takes a second for someone to lose everything. While Tate-Mitros was not able to fully recover, and never ice skated or danced again, his loved ones were hopefully at least able to find some comfort in the recent injury settlement of $3,500,000. Jurors deliberated for more than two hours before coming to an original decision of awarding him $7,000,000 for the prior nine years and another $7,000,000 for the next 10 years. That amount came down on two subsequent appeals, and unfortunately, Mr. Tate-Mitros passed away before the final decision was handed down.
