Workers Compensation Law: HB 27 Updated to Remove Immigrant Ban

Back in May, an amendment to HB 27 was made that would prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving worker’s compensation benefits. In theory, this change would help prevent illegal immigration but those opposed believe it would have done the opposite. According to those against the amendment, employers would be able to game the system by hiring more illegal immigrants without having to pay worker’s comp tax.

James Wolf, the mayor of Mount Healthy, is one of many who voiced their concerns about the potential for abuse with the new work injury law.

Fortunately, the Senate rejected this amendment, citing that further review is necessary to prevent unintended consequences.
