Why do you need to put down your phone while you drive, especially in Cincinnati?
Here Are Four Reasons To Avoid Distracted Driving
#1. The New House Bill 95 Makes it Easier for Police to Charge You
Getting punished for distracted driving just got easier. Before this new House Bill 95 law, Ohio law enforcement officers needed to be able to prove that you were texting while driving. Now, they just need to show that you were distracted.
#2. In 2019, Distracted Driving Caused More Than 13,000 Ohio Vehicle Accidents
6,988 injuries resulted from distracted driving in Ohio in the calendar year 2019, according to the CHP. These collisions led to 55 deaths as well.
#3. Your License Could Be Suspended
In Ohio, drivers under the age of 18 are not allowed to use cell phones while driving – even for hands-free talking. Texting and phone calls are strictly forbidden for minors. If you are caught using a cell phone in a car and you are under 18, you could have your license suspended for 60 days.
#4. Other Distractions Count Too, Not Just Cell Phones
If you hold your pet in your lap while driving, you could also be found guilty of distracted driving, and could get a traffic violation ticket. For your first offense, such a violation would be a misdemeanor; if you have a second offense, it would be a third-degree misdemeanor, which is a very serious offense.
Winter is a particularly dangerous time with regards to distracted driving. The icy conditions make reaction times vitally important, and texting while driving can dramatically reduce reaction times.
