A recent motorcycle accident that involved 12 bikes and led to four people critical condition has now led to the death of one female. The accident, which injured seven, happened in Butler County late last month. The accident is still under investigation. Officials say the motorcycles involved in the crash were taking part in a fundraising event that featured a group of some 200 riders.

Though motorcycle accidents are not really as prevalent as other types of accidents, when one does occur, it is much more likely to lead to a serious injury or death. The federal government reported that there are 35 times more deaths from motorcycle accidents than from car accidents per mile traveled in 2006. Below are a few of the leading causes that contribute to motorcycle accidents:

  • Cars making left-hand turns: This is considered to be most dangerous scenario for motorcyclists. Research indicates that 42 percent of all accidents that involve a car and motorcycle occur during a left-hand turn.
  • Motorcycle lane splitting: This often occurs when traffic is slow and there are two lanes of slowly moving or stopped cars, and a motorcycle will attempt to drive between the two lanes. Lane splitting is one of the more common causes of motorcycles accidents.
  • Collisions involving fixed objects and motorcycles: Unfortunately for motorcyclists, these kinds of incidents account for 25 percent of motorcycle deaths compared to 18 percent of car death. It is always important to be aware of your surroundings when operating any piece of machinery, but this is especially true for motorcyclists.
