Monsanto Class Action Lawsuit Filed

Class Action

The class action lawsuit is a well-known idea to many Americans. Films such as Erin Brockovich have shared adaptations of true stories involving plaintiffs proving damage wrought by industry upon individuals.

For a Cincinnati personal injury attorney, current class-action cases are always of particular interest. As consumers, it behooves us to pay attention when such cases go to trial. It’s important for at-fault corporations to be held accountable for damage or harm they do to the community and its citizens, and it’s also important to raise awareness of people’s rights and what can be done to protect them.

Monsanto

In recent years, lawsuits have sprung up against the multi-national corporation Monsanto. As makers of the herbicide, Roundup, Monsanto has been named as a defendant in several high-profile cases, many of which allege that Roundup causes serious health conditions, such as cancer.

In June of 2017, a complaint was filed in a Wisconsin federal court. Six consumers came together to accuse Monsanto of making false claims about Roundup’s safety.

The active ingredient in Roundup, glyphosate, first appeared in commercially available products in 1974. Since then, Monsanto has promoted its use as a “weed killer,” saying that the chemical acts upon an enzyme that is not present in the human body, making it safe for humans and only harmful to weeds. More recent medical studies, the suit alleges, show that the enzyme in question is part of the “gut bacteria” that helps humans digest food.

In 2020, Bayer (the parent company of Monsanto) agreed to pay a $9.6 Billion settlement to settle thousands of claims related to harmful impacts on people from Roundup, in spite of many studies stating that there is no proven connection between home or occupational use of Roundup and cancer risk. Bayer has been named in over 100,000 lawsuits regarding the dangers of Roundup.
