Due to how exposed motorcycle drivers are when they are on the roadways, motorcycle crashes are some of the worst accidents and injuries we see in our personal injury law firm. Here are some tips for those of us driving cars and trucks to help keep our eyes out for motorcyclists and prevent an accident:
- Use the 4-Second Rule: Keep a distance of at least 4 seconds between you and a motorcyclist. You can do this by beginning your count when the motorcycle passes a certain point; make sure you reach a count of 4 before you pass that same point.
- Watch That Left Turn: Nearly half of all two-vehicle motorcycle accidents (42%) occurred when a driver was turning left and a motorcyclist was going straight. Make sure you are looking for more than an oncoming car or truck when you make that left turn.
- Double Check Your Blind Spots: Motorcycles are smaller than cars and it is that much easier for them to go unnoticed as they pass into your blind spot.
- Adjust for the Weather: Rain, sleet or snow can make for dangerous driving in any vehicle, but it is especially challenging for motorcyclists. Give them some extra room during tricky weather.
