If you get into a car accident, whether it is your fault or not, there are a few things to remember to do. Keep these in mind, and the process will go more smoothly for you.
-
Have Your Insurance and Warranty Information Handy
Keep this information in a place that is easy to access. I keep mine in my car’s owner manual in the glove compartment. Wherever you can access it quickly, and where you can remember these cards are, keep it consistent. This is a preparatory step to do before you have an accident. Just always have these cards accessible.
-
Check For Injuries
Make sure everyone in your car is okay, and ask about the people in the other car. Getting an ambulance dispatched is your next step – by calling 9-1-1 – if there are serious injuries.
-
Get the Vehicles to Safe Spot
If you are in the lane of an interstate, and the vehicles can still move, drive over to the shoulder and get out of the way. If you are in the middle of an intersection, get to the side of the road. If you can all stand outside your vehicles, do so in places where you are not in the path of oncoming traffic. This is common sense, sure, but you are in shock after an accident and not always thinking clearly or calmly.
-
Breathe
Try to slow your heart rate. Breathe deeply. Avoid yelling and accusations. For now, just make sure you are getting enough oxygen.
-
Call the Cops
Whether it’s local police or highway patrol, notify the authorities.
-
Exchange Information
Get the other drivers’ insurance information, and share yours. Take pictures of drivers’ licenses.
-
Apologize for Nothing
Even if you know it is your fault, do not admit to guilt at the scene. There is plenty of time for that later. For now, make sure everyone is okay.
-
Take Photographs
Document the scene. Get photos of the condition of each car, of the location, of each of your personal injuries if there are any. Take loads of visual evidence.
-
Call Your Insurance Company
File a claim quickly. Having your claim on record helps you out in a number of ways. Your Cincinnati accident injury lawyers thank you for this in advance.
-
Think About Seeing a Doctor
You may have a concussion and not realize it. If you have any doubt as to your condition or your potential whiplash, seek medical attention.
