A woman recently died from an auto accident that involved her car and a dump truck in Hanover Township. The woman, 56, was pronounced dead on the scene and her four-year-old passenger was transported to a Cincinnati hospital for further evaluation.
The accident occurred when the dump truck hit a train overpass. This resulted in the backhoe sliding off the trailer and hitting the woman’s car.
Accidents involving large commercial trucks are somewhat common, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) reports that there has been an increase in trucking crashes over the past two decades by approximately 20 percent. Some common contributing factors that have led to this increase include the following:
- Truck equipment failures: Manufacturing and design errors, such as faulty tires, are an example of a truck equipment failure. The FMSCA has regulations and rules in place to prevent these sort of failures, but these guidelines are sometimes ignored, which can lead to severe crashes involving multiple vehicles.
- Driver error: This is the most common of all of the causes of trucking accidents. In fact, the FMSCA says driver error is about 10 times more likely to be the cause of an accident than any other factor. Lack of sleep and overwork often are contributing factors, as well.
- Improper loading: The result of improper loading may also lead to parts malfunctioning while it is moving. Frequently, this will lead to a large truck topping over when it normally would remain upright.
There are other factors that can lead to truck accidents, but the above three are some of the most common. To learn more about what do to after an auto accident, speak with the skilled southwest Ohio personal injury lawyers at Clements, Taylor, Butkovich & Cohen LPA, Co.
